Proximal Humerus Condylus Plate: An Overview

The proximal humerus condylus plate is a type of orthopedic implant used in the treatment of proximal humeral fractures. This plate is designed to stabilize the proximal humerus and allow for early mobilization of the affected arm. In this article, we will discuss the anatomy of the proximal humerus, indications for the use of the proximal humerus condylus plate, surgical procedure, postoperative care, and potential complications.

I. Anatomy of the Proximal Humerus

The proximal humerus is the uppermost part of the arm bone, connecting to the scapula to form the shoulder joint. The proximal humerus is made up of two main parts: the humeral head and the tubercles. The humeral head is the rounded top of the bone that fits into the shoulder socket. The tubercles are small bony protrusions that serve as attachment sites for the shoulder muscles.

II. Indications for Proximal Humerus Condylus Plate

The proximal humerus condylus plate is used to treat fractures of the proximal humerus. These fractures are commonly seen in elderly patients with osteoporosis, as well as in younger patients who have suffered trauma. Indications for the use of the proximal humerus condylus plate include:

  • Three-part and four-part fractures of the proximal humerus

  • Fractures with significant displacement

  • Fractures in patients with poor bone quality

III. Proximal Humerus Condylus Plate Design

The proximal humerus condylus plate is a specialized plate that is designed to fit on the lateral aspect of the proximal humerus. The plate is contoured to match the shape of the humerus and has multiple screw holes to allow for fixation of the bone fragments. The plate is made of titanium or stainless steel, both of which are biocompatible and allow for osseointegration (the process by which bone grows around the plate).

IV. The Proximal Humerus Condylus Plate Procedure

The surgical procedure for the proximal humerus condylus plate involves the following steps:

Anesthesia

The patient is given general or regional anesthesia, depending on the surgeon's preference and the patient's medical condition.

Incision

A 10-12 cm incision is made on the lateral aspect of the shoulder, exposing the proximal humerus.

Reduction and Fixation

The fracture fragments are reduced (repositioned) and fixed in place using the proximal humerus condylus plate. The plate is secured to the bone using screws inserted through the screw holes in the plate.

Closure

The incision is closed using sutures or staples.

V. Postoperative Care

After surgery, the patient's arm will be placed in a sling to immobilize the shoulder joint. Physical therapy will begin within the first week to help regain range of motion and strength in the affected arm. The patient will be advised to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for several weeks following surgery.

VI. Potential Complications

Complications associated with the use of the proximal humerus condylus plate may include:

  • Infection

  • Implant failure

  • Nerve injury

  • Nonunion (failure of the bone to heal)

  • Malunion (healing of the bone in an incorrect position)
